Mayday Call - a reminder of the protocol
Make sure the DSC VHF radio set is on, at the set itself and at the switchboard.Lift the cover of the emergency button and press it for five seconds. It should set itself to Channel 16.You should now receive an acknowledgement.Lift the handset and make a Mayday broadcast by following steps 1-10 below:1. Say: ‘Mayday, Mayday, Mayday’.
2. Say: ‘This is yacht ……………………………..’ (Repeat name of yacht 3 times)
’Our MMSI number is…………………………………………………………………………….. ’
’Our call sign is……………………………………………………………………………………… ’
3. Pause to let those listening write down the details.
4. Repeat Step 2 in full, then go on to step 5.
5. Say: ‘We are in position’ (read out the latitude and longitude of the boat from the GPS or chart. Alternatively, give a rough geographical estimate, for instance ‘a mile off Brighton’.)
6.State the nature of our distress . Eg: ‘We are holed and sinking’.
7. Say: ‘We require immediate assistance’.
8. Say: ‘There are (number) persons. on board’.
9. Any important additional information, eg: ‘We will be taking to the liferaft in 10 minutes and will take a VHF radio.’
10. Say: ‘Over.’ (Release transmit button.)
